Probability and Statistics

Unit 1.1: Class Introduction

On the first day of school students will be introduced to the course including the syllabus. Students will fill out an informational form and then will join the google classroom sit.

Unit 1.2: Data Analysis

In this unit Students will be introduced to data gathering techniques and data analysis strategies. Topics that will be covered include the distribution of data sets including measures of center, graphical analysis, and outlier effects on a data set.

Goals

Math.HSS-ID.A.1 - Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).
Math.HSS-ID.A.2 - Use Statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare (median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more data sets.
Math.HSS-ID.A.3 - Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets, accounting for possible effects of extreme data points (outliers).

Background Knowledge

__Grade 6 - Unit 7 - Statistics & Distributions__
__Grade 7 - Unit 7 - Inferences about Populations & Probability__
Grade 8 - Unit 7 - Patterns in Data
Students receive information on probability and statistics through Algebra 1 see units above for specifics

Common Misconceptions

Histograms and their connection to bar graphs makes students believe they are the same thing.
Standard deviation and variance are different words for the same thing.

Students will be able to independently use their learning to ...

analyse data in context
compare multiple datasets and draw conclusions
